An incredible find on this 1940's trolley signage. Richmond and it's engineers developed the nation's first trolley system in 1888. The final ride on a trolley in Richmond came in 1949. Trolley # 408 then nine others in a parade down Main Street for a final farewell. Once that was done, a torch was put to Old 408 at the streetcar funeral yard. More than 50 were destroyed and only a few survived.
Not only do we have the sign for car number 479, we also have number 409 and 474 (listed in our eBay store).
The wood is in amazing shape for it's age and circumstance. This one has a gold painted 479 on one side. There are two indents as to where a numbered plate hung on the sign for some reason. You can still see the numbers embedded.
*Measures 6' 1"inch long by 6" inches tall.
*There is a curve to each sign on one end - possibly to accent or follow a trolley car design pattern.
*11 holes are at the bottom spaced evenly across the wood and 4 holes mid way more than likely for securing with nails etc.
Fantastic collectible for any Richmond or transportation collectors.
